Res Publica/Res Communis
comparative writing
comparative writing
by Daniel Boatwright
According to Farlex Free Dictionary The Public Thing and Public Domain are the translations of Res Publica ‘Republic in Latin’(Munro) and Res Communis ‘Communism in Latin’(Dagger). In reality these two types of governments could not be any more different than they already are. Communism meaning abolition of private property and Republic meaning sovereignty rest with the people, they are clearly at opposing ends of the spectrum. But you can't judge the fairness of ones skin by looking only at the callus parts. And if you look at where these words came from you see they both use public, but public as in ‘federal public ’ and public as in ‘state public’. The difference between the two sounds shady but the federal public is all at the high end of the whip they control and govern. The state public is at the receiving end of the whip they are the people, the peasants, and the workers. Another main difference that comes up is that in a communist country a single party holds power and in a republic its all about balance, the idea that no one man or Idea controls the masses. With this idea comes built in fail safes like : impeachment, citizens obligation against corruption, and the law of the land, something that can't be changed. In a republic balance is one of the most crucial things and starts with separation of power among the govt's three main branches judicial ,legislative ,and executive. Each branch handles a equally important piece so no ONE can have absolute control. the key in a communist country is control. the communist leaders keep control cosmetically by constantly gain revenue and keeping the state a one party state. most communist economies are profit based and all profits are communal and rationed by the state. One thing that is sure is that idealism does not work in the real world and if you want to put it like Marx or if you know that sovereignty does not rest with you. then you know that no government structure is perfect and whether their completely different or extremely similar they all have flaws, these flaws can vary for the people. In a republic the treatment and general welfare of citizens seems to be better but as long as all citizens in a communism are held above poverty and not below then each government is fairly humane. but when one man holds all power the public seems to be held below. With a republic the only way to make your life better is to do it yourself and as long as that amount of sovereignty rests with you then republics will remain more efficient and fair.
